First, let us take a moment to celebrate that this little corner of cyberspace has made it clear to 50 whole entries! Awesome possum!
I've noted in another post that some of my best book discoveries come to me courtesy of my amazing, curious, brilliant, and hilarious sister -- and sometimes she seems to know just what I need! [Okay, in fairness, she lent this book to me some time ago, but its cover glittered up at me knowingly and I imagined that it did so in response to her generous spirit, communicating across the miles. She's still amazing, and so is this book!].
Lawson's book of essays is necessary. If, like me, you have ever struggled with anxiety or depression, you need a book like this to remind you that it's not just you and that has never been just like you. If you have been so blessed to be spared such things, you still need this book because it will give you insight into the many forms that depression and anxiety take so that you can support those who do struggle. Given the number of people that anxiety and depression snare with their dark and choking vines, I doubt you'll have to look far to find someone who can use some understanding. And most of all, you need it because it is darkly hilarious and we all need to laugh when the shadows come crowding around!
Alongside it, I would recommend Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half. If you've ever gotten so down that even reading is taking too much from you, her art and her insight will carry you through. Don't believe me? Check it out here!
